MBMIST conducts its third matriculation ceremony

The Muhammadu Buhari Meteorological Institute of Science and Technology (MBMIST), Katsina matriculated its Third Batch of Students for diplomas in Meteorology and Climate Change Science Programmes respectively. The event took place at the MBMIST Campus in Katsina on Friday 17th November 2023. It is one of the two WMO Regional Training Centers run by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

Speaking at the event, the registrar of the Institute Dr Mukhtar Abubakar Balarebe underscored the importance of the study of Meteorology and Climate Change Sciences as worldwide socioeconomic activities are now and will continue to be vulnerable to extreme weather events such as floods, extreme heatwaves and other climatic disasters. He however observed regrettably that even with this trend, highly skilled technological manpower is very scarce across Africa including Nigeria, hence congratulating Matriculants for choosing MBMIST as their school of choice. Upon graduating, students will join a pool of regional-wide professionals who will drive Nigeria’s transition to a low-carbon economy (Green Economy) Speaking further, he disclosed that MBMIST is the first and the only tertiary institution in Africa that conducts National Diploma courses in Meteorology and Climate Change Sciences.

The Guest of Honour, the Honourable Commissioner, Higher, Technical and Vocational Education, Professor Abdulhamid Ahmed commended the management of the school for the good work it’s doing but advised them to seek a lot of collaborations as is the practice by many institutions around the world. Also speaking at the event, the Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Daura Professor Aliyu Mamman recalled the invaluable assistance that the Registrar MBMIST rendered to them during their quest for setting up of Meteorological Station in his Institute. Matriculants took the matriculation oath symbolising their official acceptance into the institution as bona fide students. MBMIST was established in 2019 and began academic studies in the 2020/2021 academic session with the aim of producing well-grounded graduates equipped with problem-solving skills to combat climate change, and monitor and predict the weather in line with best practices and standards.
