NiMet Upgrades UNIABUJA Met Station
The DG/CEO NiMet, Prof. Sani Abubakar Mashi and some officials of the University of Abuja inspect the meteorological station of the Dept. of Geography & Environmental Management, University of Abuja.
In a bid to address the challenge of low density of Meteorological Stations in the country, the Director-General/CEO of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, Professor Sani Abubakar Mashi, has commissioned the recently upgraded Meteorological station and well equipped Geographical Information Systems Unit laboratory of the Department of Geography and Environmental Management of the University of Abuja, Gwagwalada Mini-campus.
While commissioning and presenting some meteorological equipment to the aforementioned department, Prof. Mashi reiterated the importance of having more meteorological stations as well as fulfilling the mandate of NiMet, “What we are doing here is in tune with our mandate of setting up more meteorological stations in order to get weather-related information for onward transmission to Nigerians for better planning. What we have done is to help you get to the World Meteorological Organization, WMO, standard in order for this location to serve as one of the Meteorological Stations in our network’’.
Re-echoing the germane nature of Meteorology to national planning as well as thanking the Director General, NiMet for the kind donations, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, represented by the Director, Development Office, Prof. Otaki Alanana, appealed for more donations from the Director General, NiMet and well-meaning Nigerians.
The donations, which ranged from Desktop computers, HP Printers, 7KVA UPS, Internet facility, weather measuring instruments etc are geared towards promoting the science and study of meteorology in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
