The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, is on the verge of partnering with leading Austrian and World Weather forecasts and severe weather warnings provision organization, Institute of Ubiquitious Meteorology, UBIMET.

The partnership, which would cover areas such as capacity building and equipment, would help improve the quality of the forecasts provided to Nigerians by NiMet according to the Director General/CEO, NiMet, Professor Sani Abubakar Mashi.

Indeed with commendations about the accuracy level of its forecasts coming from institutions like the Katsina State Government, Prof. Mashi assures of the agency’s determination to sustain the feat, noting that excellence is not a destination rather, a continuous phase. In view of this, UBIMET intends to assist NiMet in giving easy-to-access spatial weather forecasts to its customers while leveraging on its wide range of products like its weather cockpit faculty, lightening detecting systems etc.

While re-emphasizing the importance of the collaboration between NiMet/UBIMET, the Senior Executive Assistance of UBIMET, Ing. Christoph Neudhart said the organization would aid NiMet tailor their forecast to the needs of their users especially the farmers, to ensure they have the right information to act upon. Some of the channels to be used are timely SMS alerts of instant warnings, the warnings also would aid the farmers in irrigation and pest management.

The Director General, NiMet therefore constituted a committee to draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the organizations.
