NiMet Partners NSE on Capacity Building and Space Engineering
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is to partner with the Space Engineering Division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) in the area of capacity building and Space Engineering with a view to effectively exploit the use of satellite imageries to enhance its predictions and forecasts.
This was disclosed by the Director General/CEO of NiMet Prof. Sani Abubarkar Mashi while welcoming members of the Space Engineering Division of NSE who were on a technical/industrial visit to NiMet. Prof. Sani who described the society as unique, commended the body for its capacity building initiative, said that without effective control of space, one cannot have effective control of ground.
According to the DG, the success of NiMet in making accurate predictions and forecasts is tied to satellite imagery from space. He therefore expressed the desire of NiMet to own meteorological satellite in space, which will require technical capacity to design, fabricate, launch and manage it. “We use satellite data to make our predictions but we need to go a step further by veering into modeling and integrated satellite observations, drawing reference from the occurrence on ground” . he added.
Earlier in his remarks, the National Chairman of Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Space Engineering Division, Eng. Dr. Spencer Onuh appreciated the DG and management staff of the Agency, stating that they were on a mission to acquaint themselves with agencies that are in space related fields, collaborate on capacity building, professional development, conferences and advice on strategies to interface between government and issues bordering on common interests.
Dr. Spencer added that they also intend to bridge the gap between both agencies and welcomed interested members of staff of NiMet to be part of the society of the Space Engineering division to enable wider scope and effect on issues bordering on engineering.
